#1 PARK GUELL
Our first stop on this walking tour is Park Güell. The Park was built between 1900 and 1914 and was originally conceived as a luxury gated community for Barcelona's elite, but due to its remoteness from the city there was little interest in building on the 60 planned plots and in the end, only two houses were built, neither of them designed by Gaudí. The architect ended up living in one of the houses in the park.
#2 CASA VICENS
Casa Vicens is one of Gaudí's lesser-known works, but it is certainly worth a visit. In fact, it is the first private residence that Gaudí designed and is considered one of the first masterpieces of modernism. Located in the district of Gràcia, Casa Vicens was inaugurated in 1888 and it’s a terraced house designed in brick and features a plethora of colours and patterns. It is one of the first examples of the aesthetic renewal of art and architecture that took place throughout Europe at the end of the 19th century.
#3 CASA MILÀ
Completed in 1910, Casa Milà, or La Pedrera, was designed by Gaudí as a luxury apartment building for the Milà family. It was the first building in the world in which the walls are not load-bearing. Instead, Gaudí designed a central skeleton and then hung the giant undulating stones of fame. Casa Milà is definitely an obligatory stop!
#4 CASA BATLLÓ
Just down the street from Casa Milà, you'll find another of Gaudí's famous houses, Casa Batlló. Unlike Casa Vicens and Casa Milà, this house was not built by Gaudí but rather renovated by him between 1904 and 1907. Popularly known as the house of bones, the house of masks, the house of yawns, or the house of the dragon, the work perfectly symbolises the architect's stage of maximum constructive maturity. It represents the ideal combination of art and functionality, architecture and design, and is a key building for understanding the meaning of Catalan modernisme.
#5 LA SAGRADA FAMILIA
The main work and the most famous and incredible tourist spot of the city is the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, a church with an incomparable grandeur which is still not finished, due to the death of the architect, but also because of the huge amount of details and the size, it was designed for. To give you an idea, the Sagrada Familia is scheduled to be finished in 2026.
