The district
Passeig de Gràcia is the main artery of the new Eixample. It was created in 1860 when the city walls were demolished. Following the Cerdà plan, the district was built with money from the wealthy families of Barcelona. The bourgeois of the city were competing in aesthetic refinement with the construction of their modernist buildings. The interiors and facades were richly decorated with the most diverse materials. The Eixample dreta (right side of the district) goes from Balmes Street to paseo Sant Joan and the street of Naples.
