1. MNAC - National Art Museum of Catalonia
The National Art Museum of Catalonia is a Catalan visual art museum, located near Plaza España. First of all, the museum is especially notable for its remarkable collection of Romanesque church paintings and Catalan art and design from, for example, the late 19th and early 20th century, including modernism and noucentism. It has been located in the Palau National since 1934 and was declared a national museum in 1990, the year in which a process of rehabilitation of the site began in preparation for the 1992 Olympics. You can visit this museum free of charge every first Sunday of the month, every Saturday from 3 p.m. and on opening days, but advance tickets must be booked online to better control capacity.
2. MUHBA - Museum of the History of Barcelona
The Museum of the History of Barcelona is located in Plaça del Rei, in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. It’s a history museum that preserves, researches, communicates, and exhibits the historical heritage of the city of Barcelona, from its origins in Roman times to the present day. The museum, which opened on 14 April 1943 after the Spanish Civil War, houses the ruins of an important part of the ancient Roman city of Barcino. Admission is free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month; all other Sundays from 3 p.m. onwards.
3. Maritime Museum of Barcelona
The Museu Marítim is undoubtedly one of the most interesting places in Barcelona. In keeping with the theme, the museum is housed in the former Drassane shipyards. The museum is located at the southern end of the old town and at the end of the Rambla, and has an extensive collection of ships and boats and a large exhibition on the construction of medieval sailing ships. Admission is free every Sunday from 3 p.m. and all day on the first Sunday of every month.
4. Picasso Museum
Picasso Museum is an art museum that houses an extensive collection of works by the 20th-century Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, with a total of 4,251 of his works. It opened to the public on 9 March 1963, making it the first museum dedicated to Picasso's work and the only one created during his lifetime. Free admission on the first Sunday of each month, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m and on Thursday afternoons, from 5 to 9 p.m. (prior admission recommended).
5. Music Museum of Barcelona
At the Music Museum of Barcelona, you can explore the world of music, and its history and culture, by observing instruments and listening to and interacting with music. The Museum's collection of classical guitars is considered one of the most important in the world. It includes examples of great quality, such as the guitars of Antonio de Torres, the greatest guitar maker in history. Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month, on Sundays from 3 p.m. and on Thursdays from 6 p.m.
6. Design Museum of Barcelona
The Design Museum of Barcelona is the city's museum of design and object arts. The museum has four permanent exhibitions showing collections related to product design, fashion design, graphic design, decorative arts, textile and clothing arts, and graphic arts. It also hosts temporary exhibitions and activities that offer a critical reflection on what design's real contribution to 21st-century society should be. Admission is free every Sunday afternoon, from 3 to 8 p.m., and every first Sunday of the month.
